Updating & uninstalling
Update vamAI by extracting the new zip over your folder. Your data, models and downloads stay safe. Uninstalling is just deleting the folder.
vamAI has no installer, so updating is simple: you unzip the new version over the old one. Your characters, settings, keys and downloads stay where they are.
vamAI tells you when there is something to update. When a new version is out, Update available appears at the top left of its window; click it to open the downloads page. When the app and the VaM plugin are from different releases, both say which one to update: the plugin's status bar in VaM reads Plugin out of date or vamAI app out of date, and the app's title bar says Update the VaM plugin or Update vamAI for this plugin.
Updating vamAI
- Close vamAI.
- Download the new zip from the downloads page.
- Right-click the zip and choose Extract All.
- Extract it into the folder that holds your vamAI folder. If yours is
C:\vamAI, extract toC:\. The zip's own vamAI folder then lands on top of yours. - When Windows asks, choose Replace the files in the destination.
- Start
vamAI.exeas usual.
Your data, models and sidecars folders are safe: the zip doesn't contain them, so nothing in them is replaced.
Make sure vamAI is closed before you extract. Windows can't replace files that are in use.
If you renamed your folder
Extract the new zip anywhere, for example your Downloads folder. Open its vamAI folder, copy everything inside it into your own vamAI folder, and choose Replace when Windows asks.
If you extracted the new version somewhere else
That gives you a second, empty copy. To carry on where you left off, close both, then copy the data, models and sidecars folders from your old vamAI folder into the new one. Or delete the new copy and update the old one as above.
Updating the VaM plugin
When a new plugin comes out, get it the way you got the first one: from the VaM Hub, or as a .var from the downloads page that you put in VaM's AddonPackages folder (see Connecting Virt‑A‑Mate). Then restart VaM. Keep the app and the plugin from the same release: when they don't match, both say which one to update.
VaM asks to allow the plugin again
The first time a scene loads the new plugin, VaM may ask: Allow load of plugins from addon VamAI.VamAIPlugin.104? (the number is the plugin's version). That's expected. VaM treats each version of a package as a new package and keeps your answer for each one, so the answer you gave the last version doesn't carry over. Allow it, and the plugin starts as before.
To stop VaM asking for this version, open VaM's Package Manager, select the vamAI plugin package, and turn on Plugins Always Enabled in its User Prefs tab.
If you once chose to always deny plugins from the package, the plugin doesn't load and VaM's message says so. Turn off Plugins Always Disabled in the same place, then reload the scene.
Updating local AI services
Whisper, the local language model and Audio2Face are downloaded from inside vamAI, on the Providers page. When a newer version is out, its card there shows an Update button. See Running AI on your PC.
Uninstalling
- Close vamAI.
- If you want to keep your characters and settings, copy the
datafolder somewhere safe. - Delete the vamAI folder.
That's it. vamAI doesn't install anything anywhere else. If you made background music, its copies are in your VaM folder under Custom\Sounds\vamAI\Music; delete that folder too if you like.

To remove the plugin from VaM, delete its .var from AddonPackages.
